DIY Maternity Skeleton Shirt

A friend of ours asked if we would help her make a skeleton shirt for her to wear to a Halloween party.   The ones she had been looking at were about $30 and that’s a bit too much to pay for a one time wear shirt. Shirt making has become one of my favorite crafty things lately, (we’ll be sharing more soon,) so we were more than ready to bust out this cute Halloween top!

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Freezer paper
• White fabric paint
• Foam stencil brush
• Black shirt
• Skeleton Stencil
• Red fabric paint or acrylic paint (optional)

Step 1- Cut and iron the stencil:

We used the Silhouette Cameo to cut our stencil.  We found a free Silhouette cut file from Keeping My Cents HERE, yesss!!! Cut out the stencil on the Freezer paper. Place the freezer paper on the cutting mat shiny side down.  *If you don’t have a Silhouette (or Cricut) to cut this for you, you can print it and use an Xacto knife to cut it out by hand.*  Once your pieces are cut,  iron the stencil onto the shirt, shiny side down.

Step 2- Paint:

Now that the two pieces  (baby part and adult part) are ironed on, place some cardboard inside the shirt to prevent the paint from going through to the back of the shirt.  We used cardboard from a cereal box.

Next, start dabbing the fabric paint using a foam stencil dabber.  (Dabber is totally a real word, I checked. 😉

This is after one coat:

Let the first coat dry and paint a second coat.  We opted to paint the heart red, we just used regular acrylic paint rather than fabric paint.

Step 3- Peel off freezer paper:

Let the paint dry and peel off the freezer paper.  This is the best part!

After two coats:

So cute!  We love how it turned out!  Really a simple costume idea with or without the baby.
