We are having so much fun working on projects for Steffany’s nursery. She really wanted a ruffle crib skirt for this darling room, but man- they come with a big, fat price tag! We found a way to make our own for a fraction of the price. We made this DIY ruffle crib skirt for less than $20! Don’t be fooled, we are not seamstress’s. We are far from it. We are ‘fly by the seat of our pants’ kind of project gals, and this crib skirt is no exception. This is not a technical tutorial full of exact measurements and seamstress terminology. It is however, the easiest possible way to make a darling ruffle crib skirt.
Here’s what you need:
- Cheap pre-made crib skirt like THIS or THIS.
- 2 yards of fabric
- Pinking shears
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing machine
First, cut the fabric into 6 inch wide strips. We cut ours along the width of the fabric, so each strip was 45 inches long.
The strips need to be about twice as long as the crib skirt. The crib skirt measures 51 inches long, so we sewed two strips together making a 90 inch long strip. We weren’t sure if it would be long enough, but like I said, we like to wing it. (It did end up being long enough.)
Now, cut along the bottom of the strips with pinking shears. We chose to use pinking shears in place of hemming. It is a huge time saver and looks just as good as a hem in the end.
Now to ruffle the strips. Sew along the side of the strip that is not cut with pinking shears. All we did is pinch and fold up the fabric as we sewed. Try to be consistent, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. This is the same ruffle technique we used for my cheap and easy ruffle curtains-see them HERE.
Now, pin the first length of ruffled fabric to the crib skirt, starting along the bottom. (Line the bottom of the strip with the bottom of the crib skirt.)
Now sew the strip onto the skirt.
Repeat the steps for two more strips totaling 3 rows of ruffles.
Because Steff’s crib only shows the front of the crib skirt, we only needed to add ruffles to the front.
