Last weekend Steff and I got to teach a demo class at IKEA for their annual BYOF (bring your own friend) event. It’s such a fun event Ikea hosts every year with lots of coupons and demo’s all day. We were thrilled to be a part of it for the second year in a row! Last year we showed 2 projects using Ikea goods: Candle Dish turned picture frame and Chalkboard, and a Perpetual Birthday Calendar. This year we showed some DIY Wall Art…..we turned some bathroom decking into some fun and unique pieces of art! Re-purposing is one of our favorite ways to decorate. (Check out THIS post where we re-purposed a crib spring.)
We picked up some of this MOLGER decking from Ikea and came up with 3 different ways to use it on the wall instead of on the floor. Ikea hacking is so much fun!
The first Ikea hack idea we’re sharing is STENCILING:
Simply use vinyl or any stencil right on the decking piece. (We cut our own stencil using the Silhouette, but we found some cute arrow stencils HERE too.)
Be sure to dab the paint on rather than brush to keep nice clean lines when you peel off the vinyl.
Next idea is using ART PRINTS:
We designed these in the Rhonna Designs app right from our phones if you can believe it!
The decking is almost exactly square- about 14 x 14 inches -so a 12 x 12 inch print is perfect! (Costco prints 12 x 12 photos, but you have to scroll to the bottom of their photo page and click on ‘scrapbooking’ to get to the 12 x 12 print selection.)
Then just cut the image into 1 inch strips and glue or tape the pieces onto each slat. So easy!
We want to mention, we did try using a photo of a person rather than art for this slat look and we didn’t like it. It stretched the face a little too much and looked weird. Just a heads up if you want to try it. We didn’t try a group photo though, maybe it wouldn’t look as weird? We cut up two 12 x 12 photos of my girls and we were done cutting and stretching faces at that point. 🙂 Maybe we’ll try a group photo one day, or maybe you’ll try it and like it! Send us a pic if you do! 🙂
The last is a very simple PHOTO DISPLAY:
(That doesn’t stretch the face into alien heads…)
Place some painters tape along the sides and paint each slat. Acrylic paint works just fine!
Then hot glue a mini clothes pin to it and clip on a photo. Cute!
There it is! A super easy Ikea hack for some unique and beautiful wall art. What would you make? The possibilities are seriously endless with these decking pieces!
Here’s a couple photos from the IKEA demo. Seriously, we had blast-even though we look pretty serious in these pics. 🙂
Linking up to some of these parties:

OK- seriously SO cute! And SO easy. I’m thinking I’m gonna use your tips to expand my initial wall. Thank you!
