3 Ways to Dress up Terra Cotta Pots

Three ways to dress up terra cotta pots

Spring is in full swing!  Yahoo!  Bringing green in the house is such a great way to bring some of that Spring cheer indoors.  We picked up some cheap terra cotta pots and with just a few supplies, transformed them into something unique and beautiful!  Add a pretty plant and the house feels more Springy already!  These are perfect to leave out all through the Summer too!

We are excited to share 3 fun and simple ways to dress up Terra Cotta pots!  All 3 are super simple and use things you probably have laying around  home already.  For the first pot transformation, just grab a piece of scrap fabric!

Here’s what you need:

• Terra Cotta pot
• Fabric
• Mod Podge (HERE)
• Paint
• Plant or flowers (real or fake)

Step 1-Trace and cut:

To trace the fabric to fit the pot make a small mark on the top of the pot, like the picture below.  Then lay the pot on the wrong side of the fabric.

Next, using a pencil, roll the pot along the fabric tracing as you go until you reach the mark again.  Do this along the top and bottom of the pot.

Cut out the traced piece.  It will look like this:

Step 2-Paint and Glue:

Paint the rim of the pot.

Once the paint is dry, brush a coat of Mod Podge on the rest of the pot and wrap the fabric around it.  Since we traced the pot along the very top of the pot, you will need to trim about 2 inches (the width of the painted rim) off the bottom of the fabric.  Last, brush a coat of Mod Podge over the top of the fabric and that’s it!  

So pretty isn’t it?!  Think of the possibilities with fabric!

The next pot transformation is simple painted stripes.

Here’s what you need:

•  Terra Cotta pot
• Paint
• Large rubber band

Step 1-Paint:

The first step is to paint the entire pot white.  We did two coats, just be sure the first coat is dry before painting the second. 

Step 2-Stripes:

Put the rubber band around the pot where you want the stripe to be.  The rubber band works a bazillion times better than trying to use paint tape on a round object.  It worked perfectly for a clean straight line!  We also painted the rim of the pot black to complete the striped look.

Classic black and white stripes-so stunning!

The last pot is simply paint and a sharpie and/or paint marker.

Here’s what you need:

• Terra Cotta pot
• Paint
• Sharpie Marker and/or Paint Marker (we like THIS one)

Step 1-Paint:

First step again is to paint the whole pot white.

Step 2-Marker:

This is where you get your creativity on!  We created a herringbone pattern by first drawing vertical lines around the entire pot with a Sharpie.

Then go back and draw angled lines in between each vertical line.  Draw the angled lines going opposite directions in each section.  Then fill in random sections with the Sharpie or a paint marker.  This is not a craft that requires perfection, don’t stress about spacing and perfectly straight lines.

There we have it!  Three ways to dress up basic terra cotta pots! Crazy easy right?!

We had so much fun playing with these pots!  And Terra Cotta pots are so inexpensive, it’s a great way to save money but still get a bold and beautiful look!
