The fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays to dress the kids all festive. This DIY Patriotic T-shirt is still one of my favorite clothing projects ever! It’s a project from a couple years ago but since it’s so cute and easy, we are bringing it back on the blog!
Here’s what you need to make your own:
- Patriotic fabric (or an old patriotic dress)
- White t - shirt
- Star Shape to trace
- Embroidery Floss
- Needle
This is a great way to give old stained clothes new life. This is a little Patriotic dress my girls had all out grown, and a white shirt from their closet.
Start by tracing the star onto the white t-shirt and cut out.
Now loosely trace the star onto the patriotic fabric.
Cut out the star about an inch or so bigger than the actual star, as shown below. Notice it’s not cut perfectly, which is just fine.
Now turn the white t-shirt INSIDE OUT and place the star RIGHT SIDE DOWN over the star cut out. Pin in place, just through the front layer of the shirt.
Next, turn the shirt with the pinned star RIGHT SIDE OUT for stitching. I added a couple more pins here. Then thread your needle with embroidery floss, tie a knot at the end and use a basic straight stitch right along the edge of the star.
As you can see, the stitches don’t have to be perfect for the shirt to turn out cute still. 😉
Continue stitching and finish with a knot. Done!
Like I mentioned, this shirt is from a couple years ago, but it is still in good shape! It fits my youngest now. We’ll see if I can talk her into wearing it this weekend, she’s terribly opinionated about her clothes. 🙂
