Holiday Ornament Display

Today is the day!  Steffany and I are so excited about this project!  Last week we announced that we had partnered with Home Depot for their DIH Workshop for a Holiday Ornament Display.  The DIH workshops are such a great opportunity to learn how to use some basic tools, build your own project, and finish it any way you choose!  Today we’re sharing OUR version of a Holiday ornament display.  You can take the ideas from here on our site and go into your local Home Depot on workshop night to get the job done.  Click HERE to get registered.

Gorgeous!  This is the one Home Depot made as inspiration.

Here’s how ours turned out.

We went all classy with black, white, gold……and LIGHTS and we absolutely LOVE how it turned out!

We followed the Home Depot’s instructions for their ornament display, (you can download that HERE), but instead of a tree we did a deer silhouette….and of course added lights! We’ve got all the details for you + the printable deer silhouette, but first we need to build the sign.

Okay so let’s get to the HOW TO.  Like I said earlier, we followed the Home Depot’s instructions (HERE) to build the sign, but we’ll give you a good run down.

Supplies for the sign:

• 1- 1″x 8″ x 12′ common board
• 1- 1″x 6″ x 8′ common board
• 1- 1″x 4″ x 6′ common board
• 1- Box #8 1 1/4″ Phillips Square Drive Flat-Head Full Thread Zinc coated Multi-material screw.
• Black and White paint
• Painters Tape

Start by cutting your wood.  You’ll cut three 48″ lengths from the 1″x 8″ x 12′ common board and two 48″ lengths from the 1″x 6″ x 8′ common board.   Then cut two 30″ lengths from the 1″x 4″ x 6′ common board. 

Lay all five 48″ boards on a flat surface, alternating 6″ and 8″ widths.  To maintain consistent spacing, use painters sticks between each board.  Then place one 30″ board across all 48″ boards about 3 1/2 ” from the top and use 2 screws in each board to secure.  Repeat with the second 30″ board.

Now the your base sign is done!  Time to paint!

To get stripes it’s just a matter of measuring, taping, and painting.  There are a couple ways to do stripes.  The first is to paint the entire surface the lighter color, then tape and paint over that color within the tape lines.  The second way to do stripes (the way did ours) is to tape and paint the first set, let dry, remove the tape, re-tape and paint the second set of stripes.   We chose to do our stripes this way to save on the amount of paint needed.  We did five stripes, each 9.6 inches wide.

Now for the design.  We have created a super simple way for you to replicate our deer silhouette  design.  You can download the stencil HERE (9 sheets) and HERE (just the deer image for reference).  Print all 9 sheets, then piece them together like a puzzle.  Tape, and cut around the outside of the deer silhouette.  Now you have your stencil!  Simply place it on your painted sign and trace.

Okay, now for the really fun part- decorating!  Gather up a couple different sized ornaments, bead garlands, jingle bells, whatever you want!  Oh-and lights, lights make this thing extra beautiful.First, let’s chat for just a second about these lights-they are battery powered!  What?!  Battery powered lights were invented for projects like this!  That means you can put this anywhere and it can still light up. The best.

Okay, we’re pulling out the power tools again to add the lights.  Start by laying the lights on the silhouette and mark an X where each light will go, be sure to pay attention to spacing so you don’t have any wasted lights that don’t reach a hole.  Now drill through your X marks. 

Once you have drilled all the holes, it’s time to secure the lights. Push one light at a time through the back of the holes and secure with hot glue, plenty of hot glue.

Now turn the sign back over and admire your handy work!

Time for the ornaments.  Outline the deer silhouette with a bead garland to help define the shape.  

Now place all the ornaments to make sure you are happy with them, then start gluing.  Use a combination of larger ornaments, small ornaments, bead garland, and jingle bells.  We also recommend choosing the shatterproof ornaments.

We used the small beads from the garland to fill in any voids.

Once you’ve glued all the ornaments down, it’s done!  

So pretty and such a fun project!
