If you hop on Pinterest very much, I’m sure you’ve seen some of the beautiful string art projects out there. We have seen everything from super detailed string art to more simple string art, and all of them are beautiful!
Steff and I have been wanting to give it a try for a while but we knew it would need to be a simple one. Hard crafts are definitely not our thing! So here’s what we did- we picked a very basic kind of shape and then figured out the easiest possible way make it. The best part is we’re here to pass what we learned on to YOU! Trust me when I say, this mason jar string art is so easy.
While having a craft party or getting a kit from us is the easiest possible way to make this project, we still have a super simple way to help you create this mason jar string art. We created a template that you can download and print to show you exactly where to place the nails and how to string the string. It’s fool proof! Click HERE to download the free template.
Okay, let’s get started with the tutorial!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- 8 in. x 12 in. board, painted or stained
- wire nails (our template uses 40)
- small hammer
- 2 yards of string
- flowers
- mason jar string art template (HERE)
How to make it:
Use #18 x 3/4 in. wire nails. We picked them up at Home Depot. They work perfectly for string art!
Start by taping the template to the board. Be sure to tape it low to leave space for the flowers.
The template has dots marking where each nail goes. Use a hammer to tap a nail into each dot. A small 8 oz. hammer works really well, but just about any hammer will do. (This hammer is from Harbor Freight and it’s adorable.)
Hammer each nail into the wood about halfway.
Once you have a nail in every dot, it’s time to start stringing! This is where our dot to dot template gets super helpful! You can, of course, follow any path you would like when stringing your project; but we have numbered our template in the best path we found for stringing.
Start at #1 and tie a knot. Then start stringing around each nail according to the numbers. As you go, you will wrap the string around each nail, one at a time, before moving to the next nail. We show this in the pictures below. You will notice the numbers get a little confusing around the mason jar threads, some of the dots have two or three numbers by them. Many of the nails will be used two or three times to get the look we want. You can see with numbers 16-20, the nails are being used two times - you go down and back on those numbers. This will give you the realistic looking jar threads. Once you have all the jar threads strung, you will wrap all the nails on the left a third time making your way down to the rest of the jar. Follow down around the jar, and up the right side.
Finish at the dot numbered 57 and tie a knot. Now trim the ends, and just tuck them under.
Tear away the paper and admire your cute string mason jar!
Last, arrange your flower stems in the jar. Simply slide them between the nails and under the string. The flowers are completely interchangeable! You can switch them out as often as you’d like! Wouldn’t some Holly berries be pretty for December?! Or sunflowers in the Fall?! Any color of flowers looks beautiful! Here it is with all white. A bouquet with 2 or 3 colors is beautiful as well.
Wasn’t that easy? And fun?! We really love how this turned out and hope you love yours too!
We have already done a couple at home craft parties with this project so far and it has been so fun seeing everyone complete something that seems so hard.

Hi Grace!
Good eye! We started teaching the string art as a craft class to very large groups of people and found that our original template was too difficult to follow. We were also receiving lots of questions regarding our original template, so we needed to update to a simpler one. We feel like once the flowers are in the jar, the simpler template looks just as good, and is much less confusing to follow. 🙂
I realize this is an older post but…why is the template not the same as in the photos? The one I was able to access and print is only numbered up to 43 and is lacking the “realistic threading” details in the photo.
Hi Alexandra! You can pick up a board at the hardware store, ask them to cut it to size. We also sell it as a kit if you’d like to go that way. Here’s the link for a kit: https://loveitbuyit.ecwid.com/Craft-Kits-and-Extras-c22952028
Hello, I just wanted to know where I can get the board ?

Hi!
Can you email me the template as I can’t print it off either. This looks really easy and it’s so nice. I will make one to a friend.
Thanks!
Sorry about that Kathy! I will email you right away 🙂
We have used both 1 inch and 2 inch thick. Both work great! The 2 inch will stand on it’s own, while 1 inch may need a stand.
That’s good to know! Thank you Noelle!
We’re so happy you love it Amanda! Thanks so much for your comment!
Hi how thick os the wood?
Noelle says
Using Chrome browser solved the problem for me!
Thank you for this! I love it!!!!
Can you email me the template as I can’t print it off either. Thanks for your clear and concise directions, should be very easy to teach my granddaughters this as our first string art project.
Hi Kim, sorry you’re unable to download the template, everything seems to work normally as far as we can tell on our end. I will email it to you. 🙂

I’m unable to download the printable template as well. Cute craft idea!
Hi Krystal! Not a silly question at all! Yes-we got our from Walmart. It comes in a roll of 120 yards (or there’s one even bigger) and it’s 2.5 oz. weight string. Thicker than embroidery floss. The brand from Walmart is called Peaches & Cream. I hope that helps!
Might be a silly question. But what kind of string are you using? Is that something Wal Mart or Lowe’s would have?
Thanks for your comment mia O’Gara! The template is printable, but we don’t have directions that are in print format. The instructions are just listed on our website. I hope you and your granddaughter have fun with it! 🙂
I can print the template but not the directions? Wanted to do this with my granddaughter this weekend
Hi Marci! I’m sorry you’re having trouble downloading the template. Everything seems to be working as far as I can tell on our end. Here is the direct link, I hope it works for you. Let me know if you are still unable to download it and I’ll see what more we can do. 🙂
