Hi friends! We are so excited about this Sweet Summertime Watermelon sign! We are in love with this cute little sign! Watermelon is such a perfect mascot for summertime isn’t it?! This is a pretty quick craft, and it’s a really fun one!
This was our July Wood Connection class and it was a hit! In case you don’t know, we teach classes every month at the Wood Connection and sell kits for the craft if you’re not local or just can’t make the class. You can get more info HERE.
If you have a kit for the Sweet Summertime Watermelon sign, click HERE for a more kit specific tutorial.
All of the supplies can be purchased at the Wood Connection except the vinyl saying and watermelon seeds-we cut those with my Silhouette Cameo. Of course, you can take this project and make it your own however you choose!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
- Small slat sign
- Paint (rooster red, white, and leaf green are the exact colors we used)
- Foam brushes
- Vinyl saying and seeds
Let’s get to it!
To start, paint the back (if you want), the sides, and the front of the slat sign down about 4 and 3/4 slats as shown in the picture below.
Next, paint the white. Paint in the last slat, a little below, and up to meet the red. Blend the white into the red by switching back and forth between the red brush and the white brush. Do this as much or as little as you want until it’s blended to your liking! Now paint the remaining wood green. Do the same with the green and white, blending until you like how it looks.
Remember, nature isn’t perfect! Don’t examine your blending too closely. We like to hold our projects up about 5 feet away and look at it from a distance when we’re getting too critical. Imperfections are not even noticeable when you’re not looking at it 12 inches away. 😉
Here’s a side view, we painted the white and green down the sides as well.
Next is the vinyl. We designed a quick saying and cut it with the Silhouette. I used THIS tutorial to get the word ‘Summertime’ to curve.
Cut, weed, and apply the saying to the sign.
You can leave the vinyl just like it is, or you can do what we did and cut the letters where they cover the slats.
Use a sharp pair of scissors and cut at the very top of the slat.
Then, fold the remaining letter down into the slat.
Last, the finishing touch- watermelon seeds! We used the Silhouette again to cut the seeds. I just used the pencil in the Silhouette software and drew a seed shape, sized it to about 1/2 inch tall and cut some onto black vinyl. We only used 7 seeds on our sign.
All done! We LOVE how this turned out!
