This Thankful block sign is super simple and easy to incorporate into any style. Stained wood with contrasting white paint is just so classic and beautiful. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, but wouldn’t it be great to leave out all year?
This is one of the crafts we offer as a kit for our at home craft parties (click HERE for details). We’ve got the simple tutorial for you here, whether you have our kit or would like to make one on your own. This tutorial will walk you through the reverse vinyl technique.
Here’s what you need:
- Wood block, pre-stained
- ‘Thankful’ vinyl
- White paint
- Foam brush
- Vinyl presser or credit card
- Sanding block (optional)
Our wood block is 18 inches long and 6 inches wide. We stained it in Walnut.
Also, for this project you will need access to a vinyl cutting machine. We cut the word ‘Thankful’ onto vinyl using our Silhouette Cameo. Once the vinyl is cut, weed it and place transfer tape over the word.
If you purchased a kit from us, this is already done for you!
Step 1- Place the vinyl:
To place the vinyl on the board, simply peel away the white backing essentially giving you a large ‘Thankful’ sticker.
Place the vinyl word centered on the board. Press the letters down really well using a vinyl presser or a credit card.
Peel away the clear sheet leaving just the vinyl word behind.
Step 2- Paint:
Now for the paint! We recommend pressing the vinyl onto the wood once more before starting to paint. You want it adhered to the board really well to get nice clean lines when we peel it away.
Simply paint over the entire board. Be sure not to start your paint loaded brush right on the vinyl word, again, helping to get clean lines. Paint as much or as little as you would like here. We just did one light coat to get a more weathered look.
Step 3-Sanding: (optional)
If you like the weathered rustic look, this is the time to do some light sanding. Sand around all the edges and over the front until you’re happy with the look.
Step 4- Remove the vinyl:
Now for the best part! You’re going to peel away the vinyl revealing the stained word.
That’s it!
If you choose to do any more sanding after you have peeled the vinyl off, we strongly suggest NOT sanding over the stained word. It will end up looking foggy and just doesn’t look quite as good, in our opinion. We learned this by trial and error. Of course, this is YOUR project and you are free to make it your own however you choose. 🙂
