Cookies for Santa
This “Cookies for Santa” tray is the project we did at our Pinner’s Conference class. After months of planning, prepping, and building, we had our biggest and best class ever! We had a fabulous time helping nearly 200 lovely ladies complete a Santa tray of their own. Stick around at the end of this post for some pictures from Pinner’s Conference. But for now, let’s get to the tutorial!
What you need:
(What’s in the kit if you purchased one from us)
- Wood tray
- Vinyl
- 2 Handles
- Gloves
- Shop rag
- Brown paint
- Popsicle stick
You will also need:
- Small Phillips head screwdriver
- Plastic cup and water
How to make it:
Our Pinner’s class was nearly 200 people. In a class setting and with a class that large, stain was not a good option. The strong scent of stain would have our heads reeling, and if the smell isn’t enough, stain would not dry in time to finish the project in our allotted time. We found a perfect solution-it’s just like white washing, but with brown instead of white. No strong scent, looks beautiful, and dries very quickly!
Of course if you have stain at home and would prefer to use it rather than the brown washing trick, go for it! Just be sure you allow proper dry time.
Step 1- Stain:
Mix 1/2 paint, and a bit more than 1/2 water in a cup. (The thicker the mixture, the darker it will be on the wood. Feel free to play around with this a bit to get it how you like. We prefer a runnier consistency to mimic the look of stain the best.)
Use the shop rag to apply the “stain.” Start with the front of the tray.
Turn the tray over and stain the back. Allow to dry for about 10-15 minutes before applying vinyl. It dries very quickly!
Step 2- Handles:
While the stain is drying, attach the handles using a Phillips head screwdriver. The board is pre-drilled, so this will be an easy task!
Step 3- Vinyl:
Once the board is dry, the vinyl can be applied. Start by peeling away the blue backing.
Place the word on the board.
Use the popsicle stick to press down each letter.
Carefully peel away the clear transfer tape, peeling at a steep angle works best. Work slowly, making sure each letter is sticking to the board.
The Santa head is just a peel and stick, there is no clear tape over it like the words have.
Repeat the vinyl steps with the “for Santa” piece.
You are finished! This adorable tray is ready for Santa!
